Wynnum to get new aqua park

Brisbane City Council have just announced they are planning to build a new aqua park on the foreshore in Wynnum. Here is the news release that came through this week…

Council makes a splash with new Wynnum Aqua Park

Brisbane City Council is creating new lifestyle and leisure opportunities for bayside residents, with Council announcing a $600,000 aqua park will soon make its way to the Wynnum foreshore.

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk said the new facility would reinvigorate the foreshore area, and provide a vibrant new play area for all ages and abilities.

“As part of the 2016 Council election campaign, I announced we would deliver four new kids aqua parks across the suburbs as part of a $3.3 million investment over four years,” Cr Quirk said.

“We have now developed a design for the aqua park, and are in the process of sharing this exciting news with the community and seeking feedback.

“The project will expand and transform the existing water play area at The Esplanade into an interactive aqua park, with a range of new features planned such as a splash tower with an overhead tipping bucket and waterslide, directional water jets, water spray features and fountains.

“A toddler play area will be constructed with a bubbling stream and the whale play area will be enhanced with new water-spouting whales. A boat-shaped feature will also be installed, with waterspouts at the bow to replicate waves splashing.

“A new concrete pathway will also be constructed incorporating the existing fish artwork, and new seating will be installed around the aqua park to create more shaded viewing areas.

“This will ensure the facility can be enjoyed by the whole family, providing a range of play equipment and water features that cater to wide range of needs, ages and abilities.”

Cr Quirk said the upgrade was part of Council’s ongoing commitment to ensuring Brisbane remained a great place to live, work and relax, and works were expected to be completed late this year.

“The Wynnum Aqua Park is one of five to be constructed across Brisbane suburbs, with similar facilities to be installed at Upper Kedron Recreation Reserve, Runcorn Pool and Langlands Pool at Coorparoo over the next three years,” he said.

“Council is also currently constructing a new aqua park at the Sandgate Aquatic Centre, which will provide another opportunity for people to head outdoors and enjoy our subtropical climate.

“Our pools are more popular than ever, with more than 2.2 million people visiting Council pools last year, and a doubling in visitation over the last decade.

“We continue to build on Brisbane’s love for aquatic fun, ensuring residents and visitors to our city have ample opportunity to make the most of our great climate and vibrant lifestyle.”

Wynnum Business and WynnumCentral welcome any Brisbane City Council initiative that serves to bring more visitors to Wynnum – Brisbane’s Seaside.

Very few visitors to the foreshore come up to the shops in Wynnum Central at the weekend, partially because they don’t know it’s there and also – if they do – they may assume all the shops are closed (many are but many aren’t – see our previous article).

Wynnum Business has a number of initiatives (much less costly than the $600,000 to be spent on the Aqua Park) that would not only link the waterfront to the shopping precinct but also generally encourage people to visit the Wynnum Central shopping area at the weekend.

  1. What about the parking for this great idea? Is anything planned to include a parking area as there is enough problems there already!!

  2. I agree with the concerns about parking – might need to have a free bus running from the shopping centre so people have to pass through the Wynnum Central business area to and from the waterpark. Create highrise or undergriund parking in the shopping area

  3. Your lucky you have a great park & to get an upgrade.
I agree the parking may be a problem but at least you have this wonderful foreshore & area.
Unlike the Redlands. We are surrounded by beautiful foreshores & have parks but it’s a disgrace that we don’t have anything really appealing here.
We have to leave our Shire to take our families to other great areas. We’ve been asking for a water play park for years & they say it’s not in their budget.
Redlands council should maybe take a leaf out of Brisbane city council.
We wasted $500,000 on the most embarrassing little park in Bloomfield st , Cleveland and you are spending $600,000 to upgrade.
It’s a joke. So I’ll look to visiting your park now & in the future.

  4. Whilst the news of a new aqua park (actually just an enlarged version of the existing one) at Wynnum is welcome, when will the bayside waterfront be redeveloped into a truly world-class area such as is the case in Cairns, Townsville and Redcliffe? In this regard our northern cities are way ahead of us. I agree with the concern about parking. A new masterplan for the entire waterfront and shopping precinct is urgently needed. This could include a tree-lined boulevard of shops, restaurants and apartments linking the train station to the waterfront as well as providing for more cafes and restaurants along the Esplanade, such as is the case in St Kilda in Melbourne. A radical solution for the future is needed which overturns the existing out-dated view of reinforcing the existing pattern of development of a Wynnum CBD disconnected from the waterfront This needs to happen now before it is too late. (Look at what happened to the Wynnum Central School!)

  5. I would hope that in the redevelopment of the foreshore that consideration for teenagers and young adults is addressed as there are currently no facilities in the area for this age group. I recently read an article in the local paper where a resident was complaining about teenagers jumping into the water off the jetty area in the marina. Since when did a bit of harmless fun create such a negative media response. Something age appropriate for this demographic is clearly lacking in our community.

  6. @David Carter – well said. As a somewhat new resident to the area, Brisbane doesn’t seem to know what asset it has in the Wynnum-Manly area. Have they never thought of the tourism potential (similar to what St Kilda is to Melbourne as you say)?

  7. Whoever posted this article should be ashamed of publishing it with a masthead photo that bears no resemblance of what is actually planned to happen at the Wynnum foreshore.

    1. Hi Bob
No images came with the information we received so we had no option but to feature a generic image. We did state at the foot of the article that “NB this is a generic image and does not represent what the water park in Wynnum may look like.” Most of the generic images available were of much larger waterparks.
