Australia Day 2026
Well here we are already, 7% through the year – the blink of an eye. On that basis we’re only 14 blinks away from 2027.
You need no reminding that Australia Day this year is this Monday and there will be an Australia Day celebration in Wynnum – an Aussie Day Brekky in George Clayton Park from 7am-11am hosted by Wynnum Manly Councillor Alex Givney. The program for the morning includes…
- National Anthem and flag raising with Wynnum Scouts
- Live music throughout the morning
- Thong Throwing Competition with the Wynnum Vikings
- Official speeches, colouring-in winners, and Scope’s Australia Day Awards
There’s a reason it will all finish at 11am as it’s going to be a pretty hot day – according to the BOM – with a top temp of 34C and maybe a thunderstorm in the afternoon…

Australia Day controversy
As we have in the past we’re also conducting a quick poll on whether you think we should change the date of Australia Day. In 2023 and 2024 we conducted a poll and the results could not have been more different – in 2023 62.5% said we should change the date, but in 2024 71.65 said we shouldn’t (we didn’t conduct a poll last year).

- January 26th is the day First Fleet commander Captain Arthur Phillip rowed ashore at Sydney Cove, raised the Union Jack and proclaimed British sovereignty over part of the continent in 1788
- The first national Australia Day was marked on 30th July 1915
- January 26th was only adopted nationally as Australia Day in 1935
Why change the date?
- Current date lacks national significance, as it celebrates the foundation of New South Wales, not Australia
- Date fails to encompass the Indigenous Community and marks (for some) the date of an invasion of the land of the Indigenous peoples – ‘Invasion Day’
