Wynnum Vinyl Club – an update

It’s been nearly ten years since we last wrote about one of Wynnum’s longstanding hobbyist clubs – read the original story submitted by the club’s president here.

Things can change a lot in the space of a decade and many of the rules laid out by the then president may seem archaic and even outrageous by today’s standards. It probably helps that the club appoints presidents for 30 year terms.

However the club is still going strong albeit featuring regular removal of members for various transgressions, with there being no shortage of people who want to become members or even simply attend meetings as guests.

Having such strict rules does however have consequences, with one well known online platform having cancelled Wynnum Vinyl Club’s account this year, on the basis that the club’s own membership decisions were largely based on the applicant’s character.

On top of that setback was the eviction of the primary host due to club gatherings (WynnumCentral is not sure if this was due to loudness of the music or the ‘character’ of the members).

These issues have clearly not affected membership applications, in fact the president at the last AGM stated there had been a record number of applications. The president did not share how many applicants were welcomed as members.

At the AGM a number of discussion points were raised, including…

  1. Singles night a big hit (Editor’s note – we are not sure if this refers to records or relationship status)
  2. Petrochem night a big hit (Editor’s note – we have no idea what this is either)
  3. Deep House night a big hit
  4. Dress how you feel night a big hit
  5. SEW (Stupidly Expensive Wine Night) members seen departing with partially consumed bottles
  6. Partners
  7. Visiting musicians and their needs
  8. Departure times and impact on neighbours
  9. Drinks and which members were contributing
  10. Food and which members were contributing
  11. Age limits and income limits
  12. Feedback on venue atmosphere
  13. Membership fee proposal
  14. Who wanted to handle social media

At the end of the meeting the conversation turned to general housekeeping which was dominated by the usual conversations about the club paying for cleaners after a Vinyl Night and what to do with the empties.

The meeting also noted that there were no complaints during the year – at least none worth worrying about.

When considering whether to apply to become a member of Wynnum Vinyl Club it’s probably worth remembering Groucho Marx‘s comment about joining clubs…

I refuse to join any club that would have me as a member.

Note
After publishing this article the club president asked us to state that the records featured in the main image do not in any way indicate the sort of music that features at Vinyl Club meetings.
