Lots of comings and goings in Wynnum Central

Over the Christmas/New Year break there have been a lot of comings and goings in Wynnum Central, which we will cover in a little more detail here soon. In summary…

  • The Wynnum Fish Market in Florence Street closed its doors before Christmas
  • A new late opening cafe in Edith Street – Mates – opened in January (picture above)
  • A new gym – Anytime Fitness – has opened where the IGA used to be in the Wynnum Shopping Centre
  • A new kids activity centre is also due to open in the Wynnum Shopping Centre in March
  • In Bay Terrace a new hairdressers will be opening soon
  • A new health facility incorporating physiotherapy, occupational therapy and a range of other health services – called Bayside Health Nook – has opened on the corner of Pine Street and Bay Terrace
  • Bayside Books – the second hand bookshop in Bay Terrace has changed hands and is now called ‘GiGGLEFiT GRAMMAR’ (it is still a secondhand bookshop)
  • A new fruit and veg shop is due to open where Perry’s used to be in Tingal Road, although it will not be operated by the previous owners Myf and John Cottis (who are still planning to open elsewhere in Wynnum) and will not be called Perry’s. We understand it will be operated by the landlords
  • As reported in the Wynnum Herald, the new cinema complex in Berrima Street is scheduled to start construction this April
  • The Salvo’s furniture store in Edith Street is now closed
  • One of the larger empty retail units in Bay Terrace is marked as ‘leased’ but we have no idea what is going in there
  • There are rumours that a sushi bar may be opening in Wynnum soon – this was one of the top five most wanted outlets in Wynnum Central in our survey several years ago. If this opens it will complete all top five of the most desired outlets – a cinema, a wine bar, a late opening cafe/restaurant, an ice cream parlour and… a sushi bar
  • Where Italian restaurant Casa di Louie used to be in Bay Terrace, the shopfront has been converted by the Australian Conservation Foundation into a billboard in time for the Federal Election in May – it says in big bold letters ‘This is the climate election’

As soon as any new information comes to hand on any of these, we’ll let you know! And if you know anything, please let us know…
