Queensland Olympic athlete visits local junior athletics centre
and congratulates the centre for winning 2024 Centre of the Year award
A few weeks ago the Wynnum Manly Little Athletics Centre had a visit from four-time Olympic discus thrower and Queenslander Matt Denny to congratulate them for being awarded the organisations’s Centre of the Year (Major City Centre) in 2024 for outstanding contributions to youth sport.
Little Athletics is a uniquely Australian sport organisation for children 5-16 years. As the name implies, it is based on track & field athletics, with events including running, jumping, and throwing events specially modified to suit the ages and abilities of children.
Matt has recently returned home after another stellar season overseas including coming within centimetres of claiming the world record (he now holds the third furthest throw of all time) and a fourth placing at the 2025 World Athletics Championships held in Tokyo this September.
On his visit Matt met more than 200 budding athletes at Little Athletics getting ready for the summer season.
He shared expert tips, gave some encouragement to the young athletes and – of course – signed a few autographs, as well as engaging with the youngest athletes there who are in Little Athletics Tiny Tots program for 3-5 year olds.
